Reading Discussion

Group one continued: part two: divergent phenomenological states-point of interest for how different people perceive the inner experience in alternate ways –this was the most positive section in the chapter because it shows how podcasts can be more appealing to a wider audience –for example, the character could be imagined to be anyone and if visual, there could be just a focus on a white male, but auditory wise, you could imagine anyone Positive term: sonic freedom! :)

From last week

  • Spinelli and Dann, Ch03
    • “banners of fandom” from merchandise to live events, podcasts can offer more than a product which I consume – a group with which I identify (43)
    • superfans - how a highly engaged (but minority) listenership must be “validated and energized” (45) whether through “direct strategies” or “essential qualities of the form” (which? both?)
    • paradox of podcast not being “live” and communal as broadcasting, and many big podcasts not explicitly or intentionally engaging via social media
    • “Night Vale … proliferated online because there is something very familiar and very spreadable about its content” (59)
    • “an essential openness to the world fo Night Vale which invites contribution from the listeners … These fan art creations are not just copies …. because the fans have been given nothing to copy…” (63)

Reading, this week

  • Spinelli and Dann, Ch 05

Via breakout rooms, let's develop several topics for class discussion

Group One: Lizzie, Jenny and Wendy

  • lack of hope within chapter? negative tone overall?
  • limits of the market: interesting where the limits are in regards to how there is less of a guarantee of financial success
    • –There is more risk going into the field of podcasting.
    • –It felt like the chapter focused on how many things can go wrong. It seemed discouraging in a way to someone who may want to go into this field

Group 2: Marco, Mace, Jacob -What does the lack of history imply about audio drama and podcast drama?

Group 4 - page 110, last sentence of first paragraph - “Podcast dramatists frequently use the issues that bond the Millennial generations story devices: characters are overworked, they suffer sleep deprivation, are concerned about money and job security, and are made to feel powerless.”

Group - Aaron & Joe - Balance between artistic desires of the podcast producer and the physical environment of the listener
