What is “remediation”? How is the gramophone, microfilm, and the Memex related to the bookishness of literature today and in the future? What does it mean to suggest “not all literary texts were happy as books”? 58. What do unusual projects like William Blake tell us about the potentials of digitization? Or Emily Dickinson, what problems do her poems present for the book publisher? How do the demands/ conventions of book publishing circa 1922 effect the Waste Land and what is AH's claim about the virtues of portrait mode in an Ipad app of the poem? (69). Bolter and Grusin's emphases on transparency or hypermediacy (or both). 71. How can digital interfaces alter the author, text, reader relationship?

  1. Decide on a topic, theme or subject area for your Omeka project. It should be feasible to collect and “curate” a good number of public domain or fair uses digital “objects” (such as texts or images). Locate at least 10 such objects for class Wednesday.

C3 - Universal Library: Oral - print - digital parallels (41); digital bringing changes consequent to “ease of reproduc[ibility] , ”'convergence of modalities'“ (41), and reading/analysis of texts=data. Access in print and digital ages. Universality of holdings vs universality of access. “Symbolic power of the Library of Alexandria rested on scarcity–on its possessing more original scrolls than the libraries of competing kingdoms” (44). 20th century equivalents such as the Early English Books microfilm collection orient towards distribution and preservation (but still not universal in scope or access). Gutenberg (ca. 1971) another step in universal access. Legal/Technical prospects and limitations. Copyright, 1922, orphan work problem.
